Cision reports on low adoption rates of prostate cancer radiotherapy in Europe
Despite clinical evidence showing radiotherapy is as effective as surgery for prostate cancer, its application remains low across many European nations.
Data presented by Cision indicates that radiotherapy for non-metastatic prostate cancer remains underutilized in various European countries. While European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines categorize primary radiotherapy as a standard curative option, it is employed in as little as 12% to 22% of cases in certain national markets.
Clinical studies highlight that modern radiotherapy provides outcomes comparable to surgical intervention, while offering significant benefits regarding the preservation of urinary and sexual function. Despite these functional outcomes, surgery remains the dominant choice for radical treatment in most European healthcare systems.
The findings underscore a persistent gap between medical guidelines and actual clinical practice. Stakeholders are now calling for increased awareness regarding the efficacy and long-term benefits of radiotherapy to ensure patients have access to all viable curative options.
