Citymesh Launches Commercial 5G Core SaaS Service with Nokia and AWS
Belgian operator Citymesh has deployed the first commercial 5G core network service running on a software-as-a-service model, utilizing Nokia technology hosted on AWS.

Citymesh has activated a commercial 5G core network service powered by Nokia’s Core SaaS, marking a shift toward subscription-based telecommunications infrastructure. By deploying the service on Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure, the operator aims to reduce operational complexity and capital expenditure associated with traditional network rollouts.
The SaaS model allows the operator to scale capacity on-demand and deploy features without the need for significant upfront hardware investment. This architecture supports various enterprise needs, including network slicing, IoT services, and private 5G connectivity for venues, logistics, and emergency services.
Robin Leblon, CTO of Citymesh, noted that the model facilitates faster scaling and allows the company to tailor connectivity offerings to SMEs and self-employed professionals. The integration aims to remove the necessity for extensive telecommunications engineering, making network management more intuitive.
Nokia and AWS state that the project demonstrates the transition of 5G core capabilities from conceptual frameworks to production-ready software services. By utilizing API-driven network capabilities, operators can now manage and expand their networks in alignment with real-time demand.
