Clinicians Adopt AI to Tackle Documentation Crisis, Survey Finds

New research indicates that 83% of clinicians have adopted artificial intelligence (AI) tools, even as their employers are still developing the necessary workplace guidance and governance frameworks. The survey, which polled 1,823 clinicians across 25 countries, highlights that documentation remains the most significant administrative burden for healthcare professionals.

Documentation was identified as the most time-consuming task by 88% of clinicians, driving the rapid integration of AI into their daily routines. Currently, 86% of clinicians utilize AI daily or multiple times a week. Notably, adoption rates and recommendations for AI are highest among experienced practitioners with over 21 years in the field, who value its role in reducing administrative workload.

While 57% of clinicians now consider AI a standard part of their practice, a significant 83% are using these tools without formal employer policies or recommended guidelines. The primary concerns cited regarding AI usage include its potential for hallucinations and inaccuracies (68%), followed by patient privacy (59%) and the risk of eroding clinical judgment (41%).

Amidst projections of a global healthcare worker shortage by 2030, 73% of clinicians report that AI is helping them sustain longer and more manageable careers. The findings suggest that the question of whether clinicians would adopt AI is settled, with many turning to these technologies to cope with the pressures of modern medicine and reclaim time previously lost to administrative tasks.
