Closing Digital Literacy Gap Could Unlock Trillions in Global GDP Growth
A new report by GSMA Intelligence in partnership with Huawei reveals that 38% of people remain offline despite mobile broadband coverage, primarily due to a lack of digital skills.

Addressing the global digital literacy gap could unlock trillions of dollars in potential Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, according to a new report. The study, authored by GSMA Intelligence in collaboration with Huawei, was released during UNESCO's Digital Learning Week in Paris.
The report found that more than one in three individuals globally (38%) are still not online, even with mobile broadband readily available. The primary barrier identified for this persistent digital divide is a deficiency in essential digital literacy skills.
Experts involved in the report emphasize that bridging this gap requires significant investment in both digital infrastructure and targeted educational programs. Such efforts are seen as crucial for improving individual economic opportunities and fostering broader economic expansion.
The findings urge governments, technology companies, and non-governmental organizations to collaborate on initiatives aimed at enhancing digital literacy worldwide. The ultimate goal is to enable universal participation in the digital economy and society.
