Cloudflare acquires Deno to enhance its Workers programming model

Cloudflare has acquired Deno, the startup behind the open-source runtime environment of the same name. The acquisition is intended to enhance Cloudflare's Workers programming model and platform, which allows developers to build and deploy applications on Cloudflare's global network.

Deno, co-founded by Bert Belder and Ryan Dahl (creator of Node.js), previously released celld, an open-source implementation of Cloudflare Workers. Cloudflare stated that Deno's team will contribute to improving the Workers platform, emphasizing a commitment to open standards and developer experience.

Ryan Dahl indicated that the Deno team is joining Cloudflare "to make the Workers programming model a mainstream way to build servers." The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Deno had previously raised $26 million in funding from investors, including Sequoia Capital.

This acquisition could strengthen Cloudflare's position in the edge computing market by providing developers with a more robust and flexible environment. Deno's expertise in runtime environments is expected to help Cloudflare build more powerful and adaptable tools for its platform.
