Internet infrastructure services company Cloudflare announced on July 13 that it has launched Precursor, a continuous behavioral verification engine for bot management. The tool aims to differentiate between human and automated traffic by analyzing user behavior throughout a web session.

According to Cloudflare, automated bot traffic has surpassed human activity online for the first time, now accounting for approximately 57% of all web requests. This surge in bot activity places a significant burden on websites designed exclusively for human visitors.

Precursor was developed in response to the limitations of existing methods like CAPTCHA, which can inconvenience human users and are increasingly being bypassed by AI technologies. The engine focuses on aggregated behavioral patterns rather than individual user inputs, thereby protecting user privacy.

It evaluates interactions such as mouse movements, typing cadence, and clipboard activity, assessing whether these can be reasonably mapped to human behavior. Typical human mouse movements exhibit irregularities, variations in speed and direction, and delays related to visual processing, which are difficult for bots to replicate authentically.

While automated traffic can simulate human actions with added randomness, it often fails to capture the subtle nuances of genuine human interaction. Precursor integrates seamlessly into web browsers, offering a more efficient way for businesses to manage and mitigate the impact of malicious bot traffic.
