Coaqua Cuts Grocery Sampling Costs in Half, Doubles Demos

Coaqua, a premium coconut water brand, has significantly optimized its in-store sampling program. The company has succeeded in cutting the costs associated with sampling demonstrations by half while simultaneously doubling the number of events, achieved by establishing its own network of brand ambassadors and managing operations internally.

Co-founder and co-CEO Anthony Cadieux II observed that typical marketing agencies charged upwards of $300 for a three- to four-hour demonstration, of which the brand ambassador received only about half. Coaqua decided to take on this function directly. Now, each sampling session costs approximately $140, and the brand conducts about twice as many demos as it previously did.

Cadieux, who has a background as a financial advisor, applied a principle of thriftiness to Coaqua's marketing budget. Instead of paying substantial fees to agencies, Coaqua now recruits ambassadors through online communities. New hires complete a Google form and submit a W-9, after which they receive necessary supplies, including branded t-shirts and sample cups.

Scheduling for the demonstrations is managed by a dedicated business process organization established by Coaqua in the Philippines. This team coordinates ambassador availability and builds the demonstration calendar months in advance. Cadieux emphasizes that successful businesses are built on clear processes, and Coaqua has detailed its procedures in an extensive operations manual.

Coaqua's strategy demonstrates how companies can optimize marketing expenditures by implementing internal processes and reducing reliance on external vendors. This approach not only saves money but also provides greater control and quality assurance over marketing activities.
