Coimbra University City Fosters Hard-Tech Startups
Portugal's Coimbra is building hard-tech startups by connecting university research with applied industrial needs.

Coimbra, a historic Portuguese university city, is cultivating a new identity as a hub for hard-technology startups. The city leverages its ancient University of Coimbra to bridge academic research with practical applications, fostering an environment for technology-driven entrepreneurship.
At the core of this ecosystem is IPN (Instituto Pedro Nunes), a technology transfer organization originating from the University of Coimbra. IPN operates business incubation and acceleration programs and conducts applied research. Its distinctive approach involves applied research labs directly collaborating with startups, led by university professors, providing access to scientific and engineering resources alongside business support.
IPN has supported the creation and development of over 500 startups, including three unicorn companies. Prominent Portuguese tech firms such as Feedzai and Talkdesk have emerged from IPN's accelerator system. The organization also engages in international collaborations, such as its incubation program with the European Space Agency focused on space technology applications.
Examples like Sensing Future, a medical device company developing balance rehabilitation technology, and FiberSight, creating fiber-optic monitoring systems for agriculture and water infrastructure, showcase Coimbra's model. These ventures demonstrate the effective transfer of deep technology to address real-world challenges, with the city focusing on its strengths in research and long-term technology transfer rather than seeking to replicate larger tech hubs.
