Collector's Ocean Liner Memorabilia Collection Heads to Auction
Hughes Auctions will offer a significant collection of ocean liner memorabilia, featuring items from the SS United States, in an upcoming auction. A portion of the proceeds will benefit preservation and charitable organizations.
Hughes Auctions is set to auction a substantial collection of ocean liner memorabilia, amassed over nearly four decades by collector Mark Perry. The sale, scheduled to begin August 16, will feature artifacts from legendary vessels including the SS United States, RMS Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth.
The collection spans a wide array of items, such as stateroom furnishings, dining silver, illuminated ship models, and Hollywood props. Notable pieces from the SS United States include metal furniture from first-class cabins and an electric clock from the ship's radio room. Items from other storied liners like the RMS Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth will also be available.
Mark Perry, also an Emmy and Golden Globe-winning television writer, decided to downsize his collection due to space constraints. He views his collection as a "30-year art installation" and hopes the items find appreciative new owners. Proceeds from the SS United States-related items will be donated to the SS United States Conservancy, while other items will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund.
The auction catalog will go live online on August 1, with bidding commencing on August 16. Hughes Auctions aims to attract buyers by setting low opening bids for all lots.
