College Costs Rise This Fall as Technology and Supply Prices Increase
University students will face higher expenses for essential items like computers, software, and school supplies this fall due to inflation and increased demand.

University students are set to experience increased expenses this fall as the prices of technology, software, and other essential supplies rise. While some educational institutions offer discounts, the general inflationary trend is impacting student budgets significantly.
In terms of technology, Apple has increased prices on its iPads and laptops by 15% to 25%. Other manufacturers, including HP and Lenovo, have also seen their laptop prices climb. Furthermore, prices for computer software and accessories have jumped 17.4% year-over-year, the largest increase since 1997. Smartphone prices are also anticipated to rise due to escalating component costs.
The price hikes extend beyond technology. The cost of traditional school supplies, such as notebooks and paper, has also increased substantially. Reports indicate that single-subject notebook prices have risen by 23%, with notebook paper seeing increases of over 20%. The prices of writing implements like pens and highlighters have also gone up, potentially linked to shifts in teaching methods amid the rise of AI.
Food expenses, including the cost of lunchboxes, have also seen significant increases. General food price inflation continues, and coffee prices have risen considerably in recent years, partly due to the effects of El Niño. While some institutions may offer discounts on technology and software, students must prepare for higher overall expenditures.
