College Mascot Beer Becomes Top Seller at Maryland Stadium

An $11 craft lager named Testudo, inspired by the University of Maryland's beloved turtle mascot, has become the top-selling beer at the university's sports venues. Between July 2025 and June 2026, fans purchased 21,823 cans and draft pours of Testudo Lager, generating $238,960 in revenue from the beer alone, surpassing sales of cheaper stadium staples.

Launched in 2024, the 5.0% ABV Helles-style lager is a collaboration between Baltimore-based Union Craft Brewing and Maryland Athletics. The partnership aimed to provide internships and learning opportunities for students in fermentation science, marketing, and other related fields.

The beer was conceived by Adam Benesch, a University of Maryland alum and co-founder and CEO of Union Craft Brewing. Benesch noted that while he was surprised by the beer's popularity among college students, it reflects evolving consumer purchasing decisions. "People are invested not just in products, but in the stories behind them," he stated.

The success of Testudo Lager also highlights the University of Maryland's significance to the local community. The lager is a year-round offering for Union Craft Brewing and is available in regional stores. Despite a national slight decline in craft beer sales, Union Craft Brewing has become a notable establishment in Baltimore, hosting events and serving as a music venue.
