Colossal Biosciences Uses AI to Advance Dodo Revival Efforts
Colossal Biosciences has developed a new AI tool, GenoMorph, to aid its efforts in resurrecting extinct species like the dodo. The tool helps identify key DNA targets for the bird's traits.

Colossal Biosciences has announced significant progress in its mission to bring back the extinct dodo bird, leveraging a newly developed artificial intelligence tool named GenoMorph. The company aims to reconstruct the iconic flightless bird, which disappeared centuries ago.
The GenoMorph AI tool analyzes DNA from various species to pinpoint genetic regions associated with specific traits. Colossal Biosciences is using this technology to identify which parts of the limited dodo DNA samples they possess correspond to the bird's unique characteristics, such as its distinctive beak. This process has identified approximately 2,300 DNA targets. Additionally, the company reported the first use of lipid nanoparticles for genomic editing within an egg.
Rather than aiming for a perfect genetic replica, Colossal's strategy involves creating a "functional" dodo. This approach entails modifying the genome of a living relative, a species of pigeon, by incorporating selected dodo DNA sequences responsible for key traits. This method has sparked discussions regarding the definition of a species and the ethical considerations of de-extinction.
Founded in 2021, Colossal Biosciences is also pursuing the revival of other extinct animals, including the mammoth and the thylacine. The company's work pushes the boundaries of genetic engineering and raises questions about the feasibility and implications of bringing back species from extinction.
