Comcast Turns Millions of Routers into Motion Detectors
Comcast is enabling Wi-Fi motion sensing on millions of its Xfinity routers through a new app update, turning existing devices into home activity monitors at no extra cost.

Comcast is transforming millions of its Xfinity routers into home motion detectors with a new software update. The feature, available from August 18th via an update to the Xfinity Internet app, allows compatible gateways to monitor activity within a home without requiring additional hardware.
Part of Comcast's new Xfinity Shield service, the Wi-Fi Motion sensing technology works by detecting disruptions in the Wi-Fi signal between the gateway and connected devices. This provides users with notifications about movement detected in their homes, functioning similarly to standalone motion sensors.
The feature is enabled on Xfinity gateways model XB7 and newer. Comcast aims to enhance home security and provide peace of mind by leveraging its existing device infrastructure. This move integrates advanced sensing capabilities into the home network environment.
This update signifies Comcast's strategy to add new functionalities to its existing customer base. The company is reportedly making this capability available at no additional charge to eligible customers.
