Commonwealth Fusion Systems Orders Largest Single Purchase of HTS Tape from Fujikura

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has entered into a major supply agreement with Fujikura Ltd. to acquire over 10,000 km of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape, a critical component for its ARC fusion power plants. The agreement, announced September 30, 2026, is the largest of its kind for HTS tape and aims to accelerate the commercial rollout of fusion energy.

Fujikura is investing in expanding its manufacturing capacity to meet the significant demand for the HTS tape. This order marks a key milestone for the ARC power plant supply chain. CFS plans to use the tape in the development of its ARC plants, with the first grid-scale facility planned for the Fall Line Fusion Power Station in Virginia.

CFS CEO Bob Mumgaard stated that the partnership with Fujikura demonstrates the company's readiness to proceed with ARC power plant construction once its SPARC fusion machine achieves net energy gain (Q>1). He highlighted Fujikura's commitment to understanding manufacturing priorities and making necessary investments for scaling up.

The supply agreement is intended to strengthen the industrial supply chain for commercial fusion power and represents an important step in U.S.-Japan collaboration within the emerging fusion energy sector. Fujikura anticipates this will build a long-term business platform for the 2030s and beyond, when commercial fusion power is expected to become operational.
