According to the autumn economic forecast from leading German economic institutes, the German economy is expected to shrink over the winter, with inflation continuing to rise. A 0.4 percent decline in gross domestic product is forecast for 2023. High energy costs are already impacting many businesses, leading some to reduce or temporarily halt production.

The broadcasting contribution service for ARD, ZDF, and Deutschlandradio is using this situation to inform companies about regulations for the broadcasting fee and the existing possibility of temporary exemption from the fee for fully closed business premises.

Companies, institutions, and public welfare organizations that completely shut down a business premise for at least three consecutive full calendar months can apply to the contribution service for an exemption from the broadcasting fee during this period. The application must be submitted in writing in advance and begins from the first full month of the premise's closure.

The necessary application forms and proof of the closure period, such as a confirmation from the company's tax advisor or auditor, should be sent by post to the contribution service in Cologne. For businesses permanently ceasing operations, a separate deregistration form is available. All information and forms are accessible on the service's website, also in English for international companies with facilities in Germany.
