Companies Rethink Health Plan Strategies to Reduce Costs
Inc. Magazine advises businesses to consider high-deductible bronze health plans over gold plans to save on premiums and better fund employee care.

Businesses are advised to re-evaluate their health insurance strategies, as traditional gold-tier plans can represent a significant cost for both employers and employees. According to Inc. Magazine, gold plans, which offer low deductibles, may lead companies to pre-pay for potential claims that are never utilized.
Instead of falling into what is termed the "Gold Plan trap," Inc. suggests shifting to high-deductible bronze health plans. The savings from reduced premiums can then be allocated to fund employee healthcare costs. This approach can yield substantial savings, potentially around $3,000 per employee annually in premiums alone.
The saved funds can be directed towards pre-funding employee Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or through Medical Expense Reimbursement Plans (MERP). The HSA option effectively provides employees with a zero deductible up to a certain threshold, while also offering a tax-advantaged wealth-building vehicle. MERP plans, conversely, reimburse employees for expenses beyond a $1,000 deductible.
This shift to bronze plans and self-funded gap solutions can reduce fixed overhead, alleviate employee financial anxiety, and reclaim margins from insurance carriers. The model also encourages employees to become more cost-conscious healthcare consumers.
