Companies Shifting Resources from Workers to AI Investments

Many organizations are reallocating resources from their workforce to artificial intelligence (AI) investments, resulting in job reductions and decreased compensation. A study by Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that AI was a significant factor in over 120,000 dismissals during the first nine months of 2026, accounting for approximately 21% of all layoffs.

Andy Challenger, senior vice president at Challenger, Gray & Christmas, noted that the technology sector has been particularly affected. He suggests that as AI becomes easier to use, it could replace workers across various sectors. Companies may explore other cost-saving measures before resorting to layoffs, but even smaller reductions can signal future workforce adjustments.

A survey by Resumebuilder.com revealed that 54% of U.S. business leaders have reduced or plan to reduce employee compensation to fund AI spending. Bonuses were the most commonly redirected budget item, followed by stock options, raises, benefits, and base salaries. While hourly wages have increased by 3%, inflation at 3.4% means employees have effectively seen a net loss in earnings.

Companies are adopting divergent strategies for AI integration. Some prioritize technology, while others aim to balance investments with workforce development. Businessolver's research shows 27% of executives are cutting headcount for AI funding, with only 18% investing in upskilling. Conversely, over a third of those avoiding layoffs are investing in workforce development.

Marcy Klipfel, chief human resources officer at Businessolver, cautions that solely reducing staff and investing in technology without developing employee skills could hinder long-term success. She emphasizes that collaboration and empathy are crucial for effective AI utilization and overall company achievement.
