Company Proposes Tying All Employee Bonuses to Revenue Targets
Startup Abacum suggests linking all staff bonuses to company revenue goals, moving beyond the traditional sales-only commission structure.

Software company Abacum, which specializes in planning, forecasting, and budgeting tools, is proposing a significant shift in employee compensation. CEO Julio Martinez advocates for tying all staff bonuses to the company's overall revenue targets, a departure from typical bonus structures.
Martinez argues that every employee contributes to the company's success, regardless of their specific role. Abacum's key metric is Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR), and Martinez asserts that engineers, marketing teams, and HR all play a part in achieving this figure.
Historically, sales teams have been compensated through commissions, while other roles receive fixed salaries. Martinez contends this model is outdated, especially for startups where collective effort and shared goals are paramount to survival and growth.
The proposed bonus system requires payouts to be substantial, at least 15% of salary, to effectively motivate employees. While Abacum also offers stock options for long-term commitment, Martinez emphasizes that variable bonuses provide immediate financial incentive. The aim is to foster a unified culture where the entire team shares accountability for both successes and failures.
