Company Saw Organic Traffic Plummet After Implementing AEO Strategy

A software company, on whose advisory board the author serves, experienced a notable decline in organic website traffic starting in January 2026. This occurred after the company implemented strategies for Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), a method focused on gaining visibility in AI-driven search results.
The goal of the AEO strategy was to be cited by AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews. Initially, the strategy was successful, and the company's blog traffic grew to approximately 4,500 visitors per month. However, in mid-January 2026, this traffic began to slide.
By March, blog traffic had bottomed out around 1,500 visitors per month, and sales-qualified leads flatlined. The company had followed all content best practices, and no internal changes or external factors, such as a website migration, had occurred. The CEO noted that this is the kind of issue that is easy to miss until the traffic is already gone.
This situation is not unique to the company, as many others are reportedly losing traffic in similar ways. The previously recommended strategy, which focused on listicles and explainer content, has begun to be demoted by Google's algorithms. For two years, the consensus B2B content strategy involved publishing "Top 10 X vendors" listicles and "What is X" explainers, often appending an FAQ block.
