Company Used AI for Applicant Screening, Faced Overbooking Issues

Kuli Kuli Foods, a brand specializing in moringa superfoods, encountered significant issues with its use of artificial intelligence in a recent hiring process. The company utilized the AI tool Claude to screen over 250 applications for a director-level position.

The AI performed as instructed, evaluating candidates against the provided job description. However, this led to an unmanageable situation where more than 30 interviews were scheduled. CEO Lisa Curtis ultimately had to cancel 14 interviews after realizing the AI had over-selected candidates, sending cancellation emails to those affected.

According to Curtis, the core problem stemmed from insufficient specificity in the AI's instructions. While the AI followed the given parameters, the company had not clearly defined additional qualifications or set a cap on the number of candidates to advance, resulting in an inflated shortlist.

Curtis intervened by manually reviewing the AI's top selections, reducing the interview list by half. The experience highlights the need for precise human oversight when deploying AI tools in recruitment, underscoring that AI is a tool to assist, not replace, human judgment.
