Compaytence: Merchant card processing costs often exceed quoted rates

Compaytence has released an analysis highlighting the significant and often unexpected costs merchants incur from credit card transactions. The report indicates that with a monthly sales volume of $250,000, a merchant could pay over $12,000 annually in various fees, including regulatory, network access, and industry compliance charges.

The company states that the "effective rate" โ€“ the actual percentage of costs โ€“ is almost always higher than the initially quoted rate. This discrepancy arises because the quoted rate typically covers only the transaction itself. The final bill, however, includes costs for the transaction, payment networks, processors, gateways, compliance programs, and dispute handling.

The analysis breaks down card payment processing into three main parties: the issuing bank (charging interchange fees), the card networks like Visa and Mastercard (charging assessments), and the payment processor. While interchange and assessment fees are fixed, the processor's portion, which often includes hidden charges disguised as "network access fees" or "regulatory fees," is a negotiable component.

Compaytence advises merchants to scrutinize their payment processor statements. Actual costs consist of interchange (to the issuing bank), assessments (to card networks), and the processor's markup. Merchants should identify which fees are legitimate network or bank charges and which are processor add-ons that may be open to negotiation.
