Compression Classes Determine Pressure in Medical Stockings

medi GmbH & Co. KG, a company specializing in medical compression garments, has provided details on the compression classes used for its medical compression stockings. These stockings are categorized into four distinct compression classes, designated as CCL 1 through CCL 4. The higher the class number, the greater the pressure exerted by the stocking on the leg.

The assignment of a specific compression class is a decision made by a physician, taking into account the individual patient's medical condition, physical strength, mobility, and any co-existing illnesses. To qualify as medical compression stockings and potentially be covered by health insurance, these garments must meet specific criteria, including a continuously diminishing pressure gradient from the ankle to the thigh, and adhere to quality standards such as those set by the RAL Quality Mark Association.

The pressure at the ankle is the determining factor for a stocking's compression class. While the material of the stocking does not influence its compression class or resting pressure, it does affect the working pressure, which is the transient pressure generated during muscle activity. Medical compression stockings are designed to have the highest pressure at the ankle, decreasing upwards.

Unlike support stockings, medical compression stockings require a doctor's prescription. medi offers resources like its "mediven stocking finder" to help individuals find appropriate products for conditions such as venous insufficiencies and edema.
