Compulsion Games Becomes Independent Publisher for "South of Midnight" on Steam

Game developer Compulsion Games has officially changed the publisher information for its upcoming action-adventure game "South of Midnight" to itself on the Steam platform. Previously listed under "Xbox Game Studios," the game's sales on Steam will now directly benefit the developer. However, Microsoft remains listed as the publisher for the game on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store.

The change occurs as Compulsion Games has completed its separation from Microsoft Xbox. This move is part of a broader restructuring within the Xbox division, initiated after the retirement of long-time Xbox head Phil Spencer. His successor, Asha Sharma, has implemented significant reforms, including substantial layoffs and organizational changes across Xbox.

Compulsion Games is among four studios that have recently transitioned away from Microsoft's direct publishing umbrella. Double Fine Productions has also regained its independent status. Other studios, such as Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, have been acquired by new, yet-to-be-disclosed publishers. The situation for Arkane Lyon remains uncertain.

"South of Midnight" is slated for release in 2025. The shift in its Steam publishing signifies Compulsion Games' new independent path and may indicate future strategies for self-publishing or seeking alternative partnerships.
