Compulsion Games Creative Director Questions Microsoft's Past Funding Strategy

Following its return to independence, Compulsion Games creative director David Sears suggested that Microsoft’s previous approach of funding projects without strict commercial demands was unsustainable.

David Sears, the creative director at Compulsion Games, recently reflected on the studio's time under Microsoft's Xbox division. In a recent interview, Sears addressed the shift in corporate strategy, noting that the financial support provided to studios like his often prioritized long-term platform reputation over immediate commercial viability.

When asked if he would have approved such funding if he were a Microsoft executive, Sears responded that it was unlikely. He characterized the previous era of generous investment as a model that, while beneficial for developers at the time, lacked the necessary economic framework to endure in a changing market landscape.

Sears revealed that he had expressed caution to his colleagues during the development of 'South of Midnight,' warning that the period of high-volume investment was temporary. The studio has since transitioned to independent operations, marking a shift away from the corporate support model that defined its previous years under Xbox ownership.
