Renowned conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner is accused of inappropriate behavior towards a festival employee at the Leipzig Bach Festival. The incident occurred during the curtain call after a concert in Thomaskirche.

An incident has occurred at the Leipzig Bach Festival where the internationally acclaimed British conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner allegedly behaved inappropriately towards a festival employee. The event took place on Tuesday evening during the applause following a concert in Thomaskirche.
The festival organizers, Bach-Archiv Leipzig, described the incident as "transgressive behavior." According to witnesses and information obtained by MDR KULTUR, Gardiner is said to have attempted to tuck a program sheet inside the employee's shirt. The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, called the act an assault.
Gardiner's spokeswoman, however, has strongly denied the accusations of misconduct. According to the statement, the conductor did not place any item under the woman's shirt but briefly placed the paper roll around her necklace in a moment of "genuine confusion" due to the unexpected contact. The musician has previously faced similar allegations.
Following the incident, Gardiner reportedly acknowledged his actions and apologized in the presence of Bach-Archiv representatives. The victim was not present in person but was represented by trusted individuals. Bach-Archiv stated that they have offered the employee psychological support and will investigate the matter after the festival concludes.
Sir John Eliot Gardiner is a highly respected expert in early music and a renowned interpreter of Johann Sebastian Bach's works. He has performed in Leipzig multiple times throughout his career.
