Consumer attitudes toward local food products in France

An Ipsos study reveals a slight decline in the consumption of local products in France since 2019, driven largely by affordability concerns.

1 November 2026

A survey conducted by Ipsos in April 2025 indicates that while local food remains a staple for most French households, consumer interest has softened. Only 64 percent of respondents now identify the regional origin of products as a priority, a 7-percentage-point decrease compared to 2019. Despite this, over 80 percent of the population continues to purchase local products with some frequency.

Consumers cite support for local farmers and improved traceability as the primary drivers for these purchases. However, economic factors are increasingly influential. Roughly 69 percent of consumers now perceive local products as expensive, marking a notable shift in market sentiment. Among those who have reduced their consumption of locally sourced goods, 78 percent cite price as the primary deterrent.

The data highlights a divide in shopping habits, with higher-income households and retirees maintaining more frequent consumption patterns than the broader population. While consumers prioritize local origin, two-thirds of the population continue to rely on large supermarket chains as their main point of purchase for these items, suggesting that convenience remains a critical factor alongside price.
