Consumer Purchasing Behavior Shifts in 2025
German consumers reduced online purchases and returns in 2025. Younger demographics showed a preference for used goods and eco-friendly shipping amid increased price consciousness.

Finanz Informatik's ibi-Consumer-Report 2025 indicates a significant shift in German consumer purchasing habits during 2025. The report highlights a decrease in both online orders and product returns, suggesting a more cautious approach to spending.
The study found that the proportion of avid online shoppers declined from 41 percent in 2024 to 36 percent in 2025. Notably, younger consumers aged 21-30 demonstrated a growing interest in purchasing second-hand products and opting for environmentally friendly shipping. Approximately 30 percent of this age group expressed willingness to pay a premium for sustainable delivery options.
Concurrently, the report revealed an increase in debt accumulation related to online shopping among younger individuals. Thirty-three percent of respondents aged 21-30 reported having incurred debt due to online purchases, a figure substantially higher than the two percent reported by consumers over 60.
ibi research, an institute affiliated with the University of Regensburg, has been tracking German consumer behavior since 2023. The annual ibi-Consumer-Report analyzes monthly survey data from at least 500 individuals to understand evolving consumption patterns and preferences.
