Consumer Trust in AI Hinges on Clear Human-AI Boundaries

Consumers are increasingly open to AI playing a larger role in their brand interactions, but they are setting limits on how much control they are willing to relinquish. According to Adobe's 2026 AI and Digital Trends Consumer Report, 56% of consumers expect AI to improve their customer experience. While 43% would try an AI concierge, only 19% want AI to be their primary interaction point with brands.

The most crucial factor for building trust is the ability to switch to a human at any time. This doesn't signify a rejection of AI, but rather a demand for clear boundaries and understanding of the AI system's functions, authority, and the user's control. Access to a human offers accountability and a credible exit from automated processes.

Successful companies are not aiming to replace human experience with AI, but rather to redefine which aspects of the experience should remain human and where AI can enhance interactions. Leadership teams should identify where AI creates genuine value and what human-AI relationships enable users to experience that value confidently.

Trust in AI must be designed from the outset. This involves integrating the safe and ethical deployment of AI as a core capability. Every AI experience should offer clear, tangible benefits to the user, such as time savings or risk reduction. As potential consequences increase, so does the human need for greater control and clearer access to human judgment.
