Consumers Rank Relevance Over Price

Consumers have reordered their purchasing priorities, with relevance now superseding price as a key consideration. Research from McKinsey indicates that 71 percent of consumers expect personalized interactions, and faster-growing companies derive 40 percent more revenue from personalization.

Despite cost pressures, consumers are willing to pay premiums for products that align with their values, such as sustainably produced or ethically sourced goods. A PwC survey found consumers willing to pay an average of 9.7 percent more for such items, highlighting the elevated importance of relevance.

The pet care industry serves as a significant example of this trend. U.S. pet industry spending reached $158 billion in 2025 and is projected to continue growing. This expansion is less about pricing strategies and more about the deep emotional connection consumers have with their pets, whom they increasingly consider family members.

Brand credibility is paramount, especially in sectors where the end-user cannot provide direct feedback, such as pet nutrition. Building trust requires transparency in sourcing, adherence to manufacturing standards, and third-party certifications. Products that effectively eliminate doubt and demonstrate quality earn and maintain their relevance in consumers' lives.
