Contento Social Homes CEO Discusses Emotional Abuse and Faith

Contento Social Homes CIC has released a new interview featuring CEO Caroline Phansi in conversation with a survivor of emotional abuse. The discussion explores the decisions leading up to leaving a relationship and the role of faith communities in providing support.

The survivor, who remains unnamed, detailed how repeated insults eroded her sense of self. Despite seeking professional help, including therapy, she hesitated to involve her church, aiming to shield her spouse and home from shame. She also feared that disclosure might cause her spouse to disengage from the process entirely.

"At the time, silence felt like the best decision for my spouse, although it was not necessarily the best decision for me," the survivor shared. Phansi highlights the often-unseen efforts within a relationship and the concerns a mother might have for her children. "When we talk about leaving, I always tell our staff to respect the women who come to us," she stated.

Faith played a significant part in the survivor's journey. When she did reach out to her church, their supportive response included the question, "What do you need right now?". The interview distinguishes between forgiveness and reconciliation, emphasizing the need for accountability and genuine change from the perpetrator.
