CoreWeave Credit Risk Spikes as Investors Sour on AI Debt

CoreWeave's credit stress deepened on Thursday as investor concerns mount over the debt levels of companies heavily invested in AI infrastructure. The company, which finances its AI infrastructure buildout with significant debt, is facing increased scrutiny regarding AI overspending and its financial obligations.

Yields on CoreWeave's 2031 bonds climbed above 15%, signaling a heightened risk premium. Simultaneously, the spread on its five-year credit default swaps (CDS), essentially insurance against default, surged past 1,140 basis points. This level is widely considered a sign of credit distress, marking a 33% weekly increase and a 177% rise over the past year.

These credit concerns are also impacting AI-related equities. CoreWeave's stock continued its decline on Thursday, following a 15.5% drop on Wednesday. Shares of other AI service providers, such as Nebius and Iren, also experienced downturns.

The investor anxiety stems from fears of overheating in the AI sector and the associated heavy borrowing. While demand for CoreWeave's services is acknowledged, investors are questioning the company's future cash flows, which are crucial for its substantial capital expenditures. CEO Mike Intrator has attempted to reassure the market, suggesting that periods of market misunderstanding are expected in the development of new technology companies.
