Corporate security spending for top tech executives hits record levels

Spending on personal security for top tech executives has reached new heights, with major corporations investing millions annually to protect their leaders. Data from the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance indicates that the number of S&P 500 companies providing personal security for CEOs rose to 54 percent in 2025, up from 35 percent just one year prior.

Meta remains at the high end of this spectrum, reporting a total expenditure of approximately $25 million in the last year to protect Mark Zuckerberg. This figure includes $8.5 million for residence and travel security, a $14 million allowance for family protection, and $2.5 million for private air travel. Similarly, Alphabet reported an annual cost of over $8.8 million to protect CEO Sundar Pichai, citing his public profile as the primary reason for such extensive measures.

Industry analysts attribute this trend to heightened geopolitical instability and growing public scrutiny of technology giants. While the median disclosed cost for executive security among top firms is roughly $96,000, the figures for Silicon Valley's most prominent figures illustrate how security requirements scale with public visibility and perceived threat levels.

Companies maintain that these arrangements are necessary to ensure the continuity of leadership, viewing the expenditure as a standard cost of doing business in an increasingly polarized environment.
