Correct liner selection optimizes grinding mill efficiency

Metso Oyj has shared insights highlighting the significance of selecting the correct mill liner materials to optimize grinding mill efficiency. According to the company, premature liner wear significantly reduces mill uptime. Continuous monitoring of operating conditions and liner wear life aids in designing the next set of liners.

Metso's experts emphasize that optimizing liner performance is a complex process requiring a holistic approach. While increasing revenue is a primary goal for mining companies, neglecting details like mill liners can significantly hinder long-term results. The company advises re-evaluating liner choices, especially as ore characteristics or operating parameters change.

Håkan Ståhlbröst, Head of Application Support and Value Creation, Mill Lining at Metso, notes that changes in operating parameters and production key performance indicators (KPIs) affect liner wear and performance. Key KPIs include mill charge level, speed, media condition, and feed ore composition. Continuous monitoring of these provides data for wear prediction and future liner development.

During the design phase, Metso analyzes collected data for material selection and liner geometry. The goal is to balance wear across different sections and ensure the liner maintains an effective profile throughout its lifespan. Variations in natural materials like rock and ore must also be considered in liner design to ensure longevity and alignment with reline cycles.

According to Metso, each mill has unique liner requirements. The design considers customer KPIs, mill operating conditions, and its structural features, such as drilling patterns. Successful liner design also requires understanding short- and medium-term mine plans.
