Costco to return tariff refunds to members

Costco, the warehouse club retailer, has announced it will return U.S. tariff refunds to its members "in some form." The announcement comes five months after the Supreme Court struck down tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump. Specifics regarding how and when these refunds will be issued are still being finalized.

Thousands of companies are involved in complex legal battles against the federal government to recoup tariff payments. Meanwhile, consumers are focused on a simpler question: when will these companies pass those refunds back to them? Some companies, such as Nintendo, have reportedly told customers they are not entitled to refunds because they agreed to higher prices.

Costco's statement on refunds occurs as the retail giant faces a class-action lawsuit in the U.S. The lawsuit seeks to compel the retailer to pass along any refund it receives from the government to customers.

In its defense, Costco has argued that the impact of the tariffs is "speculative" and therefore does not warrant a refund. The company has also pointed out that members of the class-action lawsuit were not compelled to purchase Costco products, even if prices were purportedly inflated by tariffs.

Several major companies, including Apple, Nike, and FedEx, have already received significant tariff refunds from the government, totaling approximately $9.6 billion in the past quarter. Some of these companies have begun passing a portion of these refunds on to their customers.
