Couple Transforms Neglected Spanish Finca into Home and Retreat
Malcolm and Lyndsay Brooks have renovated a remote Spanish finca in Catalonia, turning a derelict farmhouse lacking electricity and reliable water into a functional home and visitor destination.

Malcolm and Lyndsay Brooks have completed the extensive renovation of a remote finca, a traditional Spanish farmhouse, in the Catalan countryside. The project transformed a property that lacked basic amenities such as mains electricity and a reliable water supply into their home and a destination for visitors.
The couple discovered the aging farmhouse, surrounded by olive groves, located deeper in the countryside than they had originally intended. Despite the significant disrepair and remoteness, they saw the potential to create a welcoming retreat for those seeking the Catalan landscape and a base for fishing the River Ebro.
The renovation involved substantial construction work, including the installation of solar panels, designing electrical systems, and organizing water supplies. The process presented numerous challenges, including accidental plastering over electrical cable tails, which required improvisation and a good sense of humor to resolve.
Beyond the construction, the natural environment tested the couple, with harsh winters and severe weather impacting the property. These periods, however, are described as creating strong memories and reinforcing their partnership through shared challenges.
The completion of the finca represents years of dedication. The Brooks describe the journey as a lesson in patience, resilience, and teamwork, resulting in a property that now holds stories and serves as a testament to their shared vision.
