Court Halts Gravel Extraction in Röderau Near Meißen

The Saxon Higher Administrative Court in Bautzen has ordered a temporary halt to gravel extraction activities in Zeithain, in the Meißen district.

The ruling follows an appeal filed by the "Landesverein Sächsischer Heimatschutz" (Saxon Homeland Protection Association), which challenged the extraction permit. The association argues that ongoing operations violate protections for amphibians and reptiles. The court's interim decision aims to prevent irreversible actions before a final verdict on the permit is reached.

Building materials company Holcim had planned to extract gravel and sand from a forest area of approximately 6.4 hectares, with permission from the State Mining Authority to begin operations early. The company states it has implemented protective measures for various species, including amphibians, beavers, bats, and sand lizards. However, according to the Homeland Protection Association, the court has also halted the relocation of sand lizard populations.

The municipality of Zeithain had previously criticized the extraction plans as "overdimensioned." Holcim, conversely, points out that the company employs 20 people in the region and contributes approximately €300,000 annually in local business taxes.
