Court Restrains Way2News From Using AppsForBharat's Confidential Data

A Bengaluru commercial court has issued a temporary injunction against hyperlocal news startup Way2News, restricting its use of confidential information and intellectual property belonging to AppsForBharat, the operator of the spiritual tech platform Sri Mandir.

The court's order, passed on Thursday, September 10, stems from a lawsuit filed by AppsForBharat against Way2News and its former employee, Shivam Kumar Singh. The injunction prevents Way2News and its agents from using AppsForBharat's data, allegedly obtained from Singh, until the next hearing.

The order was made ex parte, meaning Way2News and Singh were not heard before the interim relief was granted. AppsForBharat alleges that Singh, who previously coordinated religious operations for them, joined Way2News in violation of his non-compete clause. The startup accuses the former employee of sharing confidential details, including video, marketing materials, and financial data.

AppsForBharat also claims Way2News' spiritual tech platform, Veda Mandir, has published promotional videos identical to Sri Mandir's own marketing content. Furthermore, it accuses Way2News of soliciting its employees and customers. However, the court declined to issue separate injunctions for these claims without hearing the defendants.

AppsForBharat is seeking ₹1 crore (approximately $120,000 USD) in compensation for alleged losses and breach of contract, along with the return of confidential material and a permanent injunction against its misuse. AppsForBharat raised ₹175 crore in a Series C round in July 2025, while Way2News secured $14 million in a Series B round in 2024.
