Cowboy Clean Fuels Sells First Durable Carbon Removal Credits

Cowboy Clean Fuels, a climate technology company based in Wyoming, has announced its first sale of durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits. The transaction, facilitated by Milkywire and supported by Salesforce, involves credits for delivery in 2026. This marks the company's entry into the durable CDR market, expanding its offerings beyond carbon-neutral renewable natural gas (RNG).

The company utilizes a biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRS) pathway in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Agricultural residues are injected into depleted coalbed methane reservoirs, where indigenous microorganisms digest the biomass, producing renewable natural gas while carbon dioxide is permanently absorbed onto coal surfaces. The method, patented and certified under the Absolute Carbon Standard, ensures a permanence of over 100 years.

"Wyoming's subsurface offers both durable carbon removal and scalability. Buyers gain permanent removal alongside carbon-neutral renewable gas from the same operations, a combination few suppliers can offer," stated Ryan Waddington, CEO of Cowboy Clean Fuels. The operation leverages existing energy infrastructure and the local workforce, contributing to economic development in Campbell County and Wyoming.

Salesforce's commitment to contracting $100 million in durable carbon removal by 2030 supports the growth of companies like Cowboy Clean Fuels. The company is expanding its projects in the Powder River Basin and is seeking new contracts for both CDR volumes and renewable natural gas supply, aiming to become a leading provider of permanent, geologically stored carbon removal in the United States.
