Crédit Agricole highlights public disconnect regarding digital euro project
Public awareness of the European Central Bank's digital euro remains low, with citizens largely viewing the currency as an abstract concept, according to Crédit Agricole.

Crédit Agricole economist Romain Liquard reports that the digital euro initiative faces significant challenges in public perception. Since the European Central Bank (ECB) launched the preparatory phase in October 2023, the project has struggled to resonate with the broader European population, who largely view it as an unfamiliar and abstract financial concept.
Data indicates a stark divide in interest and understanding across demographics. Current metrics suggest that early adopters are likely to be younger, urban, and higher-earning individuals, while significant knowledge gaps exist, particularly among the population over 50. This disparity highlights a potential obstacle for the ECB's broader rollout strategy.
Analysts at the firm suggest that the ECB must move beyond technical discussions with economic agents and develop more effective strategies to engage the general public. Building authentic interest among diverse social categories remains a prerequisite for the project's long-term integration into the European economy.
