Creality 3D Explains 3MF File Format for 3D Printing

Shenzhen Creality 3D Technology Co., Ltd., a 3D printing hardware manufacturer, has published a guide detailing the 3MF (3D manufacturing format) file standard. This format is presented as a significant improvement over the older STL format for storing and transmitting 3D models.

The 3MF standard, developed by an industry consortium, bundles complete 3D manufacturing data into a single package. This includes not only the model's geometry but also color information, material properties, print settings, and support structures. In contrast, STL files primarily define only the surface geometry of an object using triangles, often leading to data errors and limitations.

Creality highlights that 3MF addresses common issues found with STL, such as the absence of unit information, color data, and material properties. The format's ability to embed all necessary data, including slicer settings, is intended to improve print success rates, repeatability, and streamline workflows, particularly for industrial applications and multi-material printing.

The company also distinguishes 3MF from G-code. While 3MF acts as a design and configuration file containing the model and print parameters, G-code is the machine instruction file generated after slicing, containing the precise toolpaths for the printer. 3MF files can be opened and used with various 3D printing slicer software and viewers.
