Creality 3D Explains Vase Mode for 3D Printing

Shenzhen Creality 3D Technology Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of 3D printing equipment, has published a guide explaining "vase mode," a specialized printing technique designed for creating objects with smooth, continuous surfaces. This method significantly alters the standard 3D printing process, resulting in prints without visible Z-seams.

Technically referred to as "spiralized contour," vase mode operates by having the printer's nozzle move in a single, unbroken spiral motion upwards, rather than building the object layer by layer. In this mode, the extruder does not stop or restart for each layer, which effectively eliminates Z-seams, blobs, and stringing. The outcome is a print characterized by a clean outer surface, no internal infill, and no top layers.

According to Creality, vase mode is best suited for models where a smooth, decorative finish is the primary goal, and structural integrity is not a major concern. This approach can also lead to reduced material consumption and faster print times. However, the company advises against using vase mode for parts that require high strength, possess internal structures, need a solid top surface, or must be airtight.

The guide also provides instructions on enabling vase mode in popular slicing software, including Orca Slicer and Creality Print. For optimal results, Creality recommends specific print settings such as a wider line width (0.6-0.8mm) for a more robust single wall, a slightly increased layer height (0.2-0.25mm) for better bonding in the spiral, and a slower print speed (40mm/s) to ensure consistent extrusion. A thicker base is also advised for improved stability.
