Creality 3D Offers Guide to Fix 3D Printing Stringing Issues

Shenzhen Creality 3D Technology Co., Ltd. has published a troubleshooting guide for "3D print stringing," a common issue where filament forms thin strands between printed parts. This phenomenon, also known as "oozing" or "hairy prints," can affect the aesthetic quality of 3D-printed objects.

The guide identifies several primary causes for stringing, focusing on both printer settings and material conditions. Incorrect or insufficient "retraction settings"—the process of pulling filament back into the nozzle during non-printing travel moves—are cited as the leading cause. If retraction is not properly configured, molten filament can leak and form undesirable threads.

Other contributing factors include excessively high printing temperatures, which can cause filament to over-melt and ooze more readily. Filament moisture is also a significant problem; hygroscopic materials can absorb water, leading to steam formation within the hotend and uncontrolled extrusion. Furthermore, slow or long travel moves by the print head increase the likelihood of filament leakage during transit.

Creality 3D recommends users first perform a "stringing test" to diagnose the extent of the problem. Adjustments to retraction distance and speed, along with incrementally lowering the nozzle temperature, are suggested fixes. Proper filament storage and drying of moist filament are also highlighted as crucial preventative measures.

The company emphasizes that most stringing issues are resolvable through these adjustments, leading to improved print quality and finish for users of FDM 3D printers.
