Creator Metric Brands May Care About More Than Followers
Brands are shifting focus from follower counts to creator expertise and conversion power. This industry change reflects new buyers, particularly in technology.

The influencer marketing industry is seeing a shift in how creators are valued, moving away from a sole reliance on follower counts towards a greater emphasis on expertise and proven conversion ability. Jodie Taylor, who previously worked at Google and Morgan Stanley before becoming a prominent social media creator, argues that audience size no longer directly correlates with revenue.
According to Taylor, the saturation of the creator market has fueled this change. "People are now trading on expertise," she stated. This represents a departure from traditional marketing procurement, where follower numbers have historically dictated rates.
This evolution is driven by a new wave of brand buyers. Beyond traditional beauty and lifestyle companies, a growing number of technology firms, AI companies, and even financial institutions are investing in influencer marketing. These entities seek creators who can effectively communicate the technical aspects or specialized knowledge of their offerings.
"An AI company may or may not partner with a beauty or lifestyle creator, but they’re absolutely going to partner with someone who’s a corporate content creator," Taylor explained. The largest budgets in this space are currently coming from the technology and financial services sectors, which prioritize specialized knowledge and demonstrable impact over sheer reach.
