Investment firm Man Group has released a podcast episode featuring Professor Saleem Ali of the University of Delaware discussing the escalating global competition for critical minerals. The conversation centers on how geopolitical and geoeconomic pressures have transformed these resources into key points in expanding global trade conflicts.
Ali emphasizes that the transition towards cleaner energy inherently drives a significant increase in demand for specific minerals. He notes that electric vehicles require substantially more copper than conventional cars, and offshore wind projects utilize nine times the amount of minerals compared to a natural gas-fired power plant of equivalent generating capacity.
"Materials and energy production are inextricably linked," Ali stated in the podcast. He explained that while shifting away from fossil fuels may reduce certain pollution types, it simultaneously leads to an increased reliance on other materials, particularly critical minerals, to support the new energy infrastructure.
The podcast also addresses the significant challenges in mineral extraction. Developing a new mine can take between 15 to 20 years due to complex logistical, construction, and permitting hurdles. Currently, only about 10% of exploration projects successfully result in a finished mine, impacting the speed at which supply can meet demand for the energy transition.
