Crunchfish Receives European Intention to Grant for Offline Digital Value Transfer
Crunchfish has received an Intention to Grant from the European Patent Office for its technology enabling offline digital value transfer between mobile wallets and payment cards.
Swedish tech firm Crunchfish has received an Intention to Grant from the European Patent Office (EPO) for its patent application covering the local transfer of digital value between a mobile wallet and an EMV-compatible smart card.
The technology allows a payment card to be topped up directly from a mobile device. This local transfer can be performed without network connectivity, enhancing accessibility in areas with limited or unreliable internet access. Value stored on the card can subsequently be transferred to another mobile device or used for payments at a point of sale.
The mechanism is applicable to both immediate and governed offline transfers. This capability aims to facilitate new payment solutions that do not rely on constant online connections, potentially increasing financial inclusion. Crunchfish seeks to promote the adoption of offline payment capabilities globally.
If granted, the patent would strengthen Crunchfish's position in the digital payments technology sector. The company has previously secured patents and intentions to grant in other key markets, including the United States and India.
