CSL Delivers First Battery-Powered Bulk Carrier

Shipping News (SYDNEY, NSW) – CSL Group (CSL) and Adbri announced on June 12, 2026, the delivery of the MV Yampu. This vessel marks a significant milestone as the world's first battery-powered, self-unloading bulk carrier, intended to support Adbri's critical limestone operations.

The 11,000 deadweight tonne vessel represents a major advancement in sustainable maritime logistics. It is designed to transport approximately 2.7 million tonnes of limestone annually for Adbri, a 35% increase over its predecessor. The MV Yampu is expected to reduce diesel consumption by 25% and Type 1 emissions by 40% compared to the ship it replaces.

Developed through close collaboration between CSL and Adbri, the MV Yampu aims to enhance supply chain efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. By 2031, the vessel is projected to transition to full electric power, cutting emissions by over 90% and setting a new benchmark for low-carbon bulk shipping.

Owned and operated by CSL with an Australian crew, the MV Yampu will commence operations in Birkenhead, South Australia. Its deployment is expected to ensure more reliable, efficient, and sustainable supply of essential raw materials for Adbri.

The successful delivery underscores a shared commitment by both companies to innovation, operational excellence, and the decarbonization of the maritime sector.
