CSN Enhances Efficiency and Safety with Pump Monitoring System
CSN Mineração has significantly boosted its production facility's reliability and safety by implementing an online monitoring system from Metso on 34 critical pumps at the Casa de Pedra mine in Brazil. The initiative, deployed in January 2024, utilizes 160 sensors and eight gateways to track real-time variables such as vibration and temperature.
Since the system's implementation, the mining company has achieved 98% reliability for the monitored equipment and avoided over R$3.1 million in corrective maintenance costs. Furthermore, it has proactively identified and addressed 20 potential equipment failures, preventing unexpected downtime.
According to Thiago Vale, Filtration and Loading Manager at CSN, the project's success also hinged on an organizational shift towards data-driven decision-making. The company revised processes and trained teams to interpret and act on the data daily, transforming maintenance from a reactive to a planned activity.
Metso provided the monitoring solution and continues to support the project. The system enables precise identification of issues like bearing failures and mechanical deformations. CSN has established a Reliability and Asset Monitoring Center (CCMA) to centralize analyses and integrate data from various plant systems.
Based on these results, CSN plans to expand its sensor deployment to 2,500 assets by 2026, solidifying its digital infrastructure and enhancing operational control.
