Cursor launches Origin code hosting platform amid GitHub outage

Coding tool Cursor began rolling out its own code hosting platform, Origin, to paid users on Monday. The launch coincided with a widespread, hours-long global outage for GitHub that impacted various services, including code commits and API access.

The GitHub outage, which also affected its AI tool Copilot, provided an unexpected backdrop for Cursor Origin. Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch commented on X: "And unlike GitHub, it's online." While Cursor reportedly delayed its launch due to GitHub's issues, the timing underscored the new platform's argument: in the age of AI, the choice of code hosting location is once again a significant decision.

Origin integrates directly into the Cursor editor, allowing teams to host their code repositories and manage pull requests from within the editor. The platform enables AI agents to operate within the same interface as the code and pull requests, facilitating code changes and reviews without needing a separate browser.

Initial integrations with Vercel, Depot, and Buildkite support existing GitHub Actions workflows, simplifying adoption without major overhauls to current systems. Cursor does not require users to fully migrate from GitHub, instead allowing the connection of GitHub organizations and repositories. Code changelogs and pull request conversations sync bi-directionally, leaving GitHub as the primary source of truth.

Cursor acquired code review startup Graphite in December 2025, strengthening its commitment to enhanced code collaboration. Origin embodies this strategy, aiming to make the boundary between writing code and collaborating on it more seamless, particularly within an AI-assisted development environment.
