Cambridge-based AI startup CuspAI announced on Monday it has raised $450 million in a Series B funding round. The investment values the company at $2.6 billion, a significant increase from its previous valuation. Investors are backing CuspAI's efforts to utilize artificial intelligence for the discovery of new materials.
The funding round was led by Kleiner Perkins and NEA, with participation from Jeff Bezos's family office, Bezos Expeditions. The capital infusion is earmarked to support CuspAI's operational expansion into the United States, Europe, and Asia.
In conjunction with the funding announcement, CuspAI unveiled its AI Materials Foundry. This initiative aims to accelerate materials discovery by connecting compute providers, laboratories, proprietary data, and scientific expertise. Founding members of the network include major organizations such as Nvidia, Meta's Fundamental AI Research team, Samsung, Hyundai Motor Group, and Merck.
CuspAI's proprietary AI platform, named MIRA, is designed to manage the entire materials discovery workflow, from initial material design to simulation and experimental validation. CEO Chad Edwards highlighted the critical need for rapid advancements in material science to support future industrial progress.
