Cyber gang ShinyHunters claims breach of FBI job portal

The cybercrime group ShinyHunters claimed on Tuesday to have breached the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) job portal and obtained a large volume of data from former and current FBI employees.

The FBI is aware of the breach claim concerning the portal fbijobs.gov and is currently investigating the alleged incident. ShinyHunters posted an article on their darknet site, stating the attack was a reaction to an FBI report from May that advised against paying ransoms. The group demands the FBI withdraw or adjust the report within a week.

As of reporting, the FBI's job portal remains offline. ShinyHunters claims to have stolen data from nearly all FBI agents and individuals who applied through the portal. The group provided a sample dataset of approximately 5,000 alleged FBI agents and a screenshot of the job portal as proof. Reuters could not verify the screenshot's authenticity, but cross-referenced parts of the data with previous leaks and credit information, finding matches in several cases.

The FBI is working with the portal's service providers to determine if the attack targeted a third-party vendor or FBI systems. Indications of the breach on ShinyHunters' darknet site are no longer visible.
